I. Profile of Yunnan Arts University

Yunnan Arts University (the YNAU), established in 1959, is one of the eight comprehensive arts universities that provide regular undergraduate education in China. Located in Kunming, a beautiful city known as “the City of Eternal Spring,YNAU has two campuses: Chengong Campus and Mayuan Campus, covering a total area of over 930 mu (about 62 ha.). YNAU has 12 education units: the School of Music, the School of Dance, the School of Drama, the School of Film and Television, the School of Fine Arts, the School of Design, the School of Arts Management, the School of Higher Vocational and Continuing Education, the Institute of Ethnic Arts, the School of Marxism, the Department of Public Education, and the Department of Physical Education, in addition to one affiliated school of arts. YNAU offers 26 undergraduate major programs involving two academic fields: arts and literature, and possesses five first-tier disciplines of arts.

In 2003, YNAU was authorized to offer master’s degrees, and in 2009, YNAU was approved as a MFA (Master of Fine Arts) training unit. Now YNAU is empowered to offer master’s degrees in five first-tier disciplines: theory of arts, music and dance, drama and film and television, fine arts, and design; and MFA degrees in eight fields: music, drama, traditional Chinese opera, film, radio and television, dance, fine arts, and artistic design.

YNAU was approved in 2009 as a provincial doctor training and education unit authorized to offer doctoral degrees, and was approved in 2019 as a provincial-level post-doctoral research center dedicated to artistic theory. Currently the university possesses five provincial-level key disciplines, two provincial-level advantageous and characteristic disciplines and three provincial-level A-class highland disciplines; eight provincial and ministerial-level research platforms including the Yunnan Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center, the Key Laboratory, the Engineering Research Center, the Base, and the Think Tank; and ten provincial-level teaching and scientific research teams. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, YNAUs disciplines of arts, science of drama, film and television, science of music and dance, design, and theory of arts ranked among the top in terms of a number of indicators.

Currently YNAU have 9 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites and 6 Yunnan provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, accounting for 57.7% of the universitys 26 majors available for student enrollment. In 2020, YNAU had six courses recognized in China’s “Double Ten-Thousand Plan” as national first-class courses and 10 courses recognized as provincial first-class courses, ranking third in Yunnan Province, and first among arts colleges and universities in China.

YNAU adheres to the school-operating philosophy of “carrying forward good traditions, drawing experience from folks, being inclusive to Chinese and foreign cultures, and serving society, and the school spirit of “appreciating each other and helping each other to make achievements. The university has set its roots in Yunnan, where rich and diverse ethnic cultures have been created, aiming to become a high-level regional arts university with international influence and distinctive features. Since its establishment, YNAU has gathered numerous famous artists and produced a large number of artistic talents for communities.

 

II. Profile of YNAU Faculties

YNAU has 12 education units: the School of Music, the School of Dance, the School of Drama, the School of Film and Television, the School of Fine Arts, the School of Design, the School of Arts Management, the School of Higher Vocational and Continuing Education, the Institute of Ethnic Arts, the School of Marxism, the Department of Public Education, and the Department of Physical Education, in addition to one affiliated school of arts.

 

III. Education Services for International students

YNAU got the authorization in 1996 for recruiting international students and began its international student recruitment in 1998. With an accurate focus of efforts, a clear-cut setting of curriculums and an efficient recruitment management team, the university has produced numerous high-quality foreign arts professionals, making contributions to the education of international students and internationalization of school operation in Yunnan Province.

YNAU has been approved by the Yunnan provincial government as an international talent training base for ethnic arts, and an institution authorized to offer government scholarships to students from surrounding countries. The university also is qualified to award bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees in arts to international students, as well as provide long-term and short-term training on Chinese language or arts for foreign students.

YNAU also provides a variety of artistic education courses with unique features for foreign students. In recent years, the university has attracted and recruited almost 1,000 international students from 21 countries and regions. Graduating with solid professional strengths and an artistic vision of diversity, the international students are expected to have good employment prospects. This is also a highlight of YNAUs education for foreign students.

V. Schedules of Enrollment and Examination

(I) For international students applying for degree study (art-category bachelor or master), we organize dedicated exams on the same subjects as those for domestic students applying to the same major. International students may register for the exams at any time from March to June and from September to December each year.

(II) For international students applying for non-degree study (short-term or long-term study of an art-category or a Chinese-category major), we organize dedicated exams on subjects largely the same as those for domestic students applying to the same major. International students may register for the exams throughout the year.

 

VI. Requirements for Registration

(I) For international students applying for degree study (art-category bachelor or master):

1. Requirements for registration:

Aged 50 or below and holding a valid non-Chinese passport or identity document.

2. Materials required for registration:

(1) One notarized high school diploma;

(2) One notarized high school transcript;

(3) One letter of recommendation from an expert of the intended major;

(4) A set of related works (for example, six photos of your paintings; or a CD or VCD recording your music works and lasting about 10 to15 minutes, etc.);

(5) If you have taken the Chinese Proficiency Test, please provide a copy of the test result;

(6) One study plan;

(7) One copy of your valid passport and visa;

(7) Four of your color identification photos with a white background.

 

(II) For international students applying for non-degree study (short-term or long-term study of an art-category or Chinese-category major),

1. Requirements for registration:

Aged 55 or below and holding a valid non-Chinese passport or identity document.

2. Materials required for registration:

(1) For students applying for short-term or long-term study of an art-category major:

A set of related works (for example, six photos of your paintings; or a CD or VCD recording your music works and lasting about 10 to15 minutes, etc.);

If you have taken the Chinese Proficiency Test, please provide a copy of the test result;

One study plan;

One copy of your valid passport and visa;

Four of your color identification photos with a white background.

(2) For students applying for short-term or long-term study of a Chinese-related major:

VII. Application Process

1. The applicant contacts the Center for Exchange and Research of South and Southeast Asian Art, YNAU (roxy_tseng@foxmail.com), for the YNAU Application Form for Oversea Students, then fills out the Form and attaches it to the reply sent to the above email address. All the information provided by the applicant in the materials required must be true and accurate.

2. After receiving the materials required, the Center will handle your application as soon as possible.

3. If the materials pass the scrutiny, the Center will arrange the exams on subjects corresponding to the intended art-category major.

4. For foreign students who are admitted to our university, the Center will send them the Visa Application Form (Form JW 202) and a Letter of YNAU Admission for Foreign Students.

4. Within 20 days before the expiration of the visa, the applicant must get to the Center along with his/her valid passport and four of his/her color identification photos with a whit background and the barcode provided by the Exit and Entry Administration Bureau, to apply for a visa extension or residence permit, or to complete other procedures required.

VIII. Fees and Charges (Notes: The following rates may be adjusted without prior notice)

(I) Tuition fee:

1. Non-degree:

(1) Art-category study

A. One-to-one teaching: 100 yuan/class (Notes: Each semester is 15 weeks in length, with at least 8 classes provided a week).

B. Whole-class teaching: 60 yuan/class (Notes: Each semester is 15 weeks in length, with at least 8 classes provided a week).

(2) Chinese-category study:

A. “One-to-one teaching: 80 yuan/class (Notes: Each semester is 15 weeks in length, with at least 6 classes provided a week).

B. Whole-class teaching: 50 yuan/class (Notes: Each semester is 15 weeks in length, with at least 6 classes provided a week).

2. Degree:

(1) Art-category undergraduate student: RMB 20,000 yuan/year;

(2) Art-category postgraduate students: RMB 25,000 yuan/year.

(II) Accommodation fee:

RMB 4,800 yuan/year/room.

Notes: Each room can accommodate two students (of the same gender).

(III) Registration fee:

300 yuan/person

 

IX. Infrastructure

The Library of Yunnan Arts University has a collection of over 450,000 books and 129,786 electronic books (documents), and has annual subscriptions to 593 Chinese journals, 45 newspapers and 51 foreign-language journals. YNAU has a complete set of teaching equipment, advanced and sufficient facilities and resources for arts education, places for a variety of sports, and two canteens.
